#ProudToBeWell: How To Empower Your Full Spectrum of Emotions

  1. Use an Emotional Chart to Understand How You’re Feeling

When we first learn about emotions, most of us learn three feelings: I feel happy, sad or angry. The truth is, emotions are a little more complex. Sometimes you might feel multiple things at once, or there’s an emotion behind the emotion. Using an emotions chart can help you pinpoint exactly how you’re feeling. You might not always know what caused you to feel a certain way, but acknowledging and noticing the feeling is equally as important to your overall health.

2. Use the 24-hour Rule Before Responding If Your Angry or Upset

The 24-hour rule is a great way to manage your emotions. By making a conscious decision to step away from the situation, you remind yourself that even if you can’t control your emotions, you can control of how you respond. Let the dust settle and revisit heated conversations or situations from a calmer perspective. This will help you avoid saying or doing something you’ll regret later and also give you the space needed to communicate how you truly feel.

3. Practice Mindfulness and Listen To Your Emotions

Contrary to popular belief, mindfulness is not about stopping all your thoughts. Mindfulness is noticing the thoughts you have and how they make you feel. As you go throughout your day, try to look at emotions as a messenger- they can tell you a lot about yourself if you listen. Try to avoid judging yourself when emotions come up and instead ask yourself: what is this emotion trying to tell me?
