Catarina, Vice President of Academics

Hi everyone, my name is Catarina, and feel free to call me Cat. I’m a VP of Academics at SSU. In this role, I will be working closely with students, both domestic and international students, to support them on their academic journey at Sheridan. I feel like the SSU is a place where people all have a connection with each other, regardless of which program you are in, which country you come from, or how old you are. We can always have so much fun together. At the SSU, I’m looking forward to supporting students, meeting new people here, and getting a chance to collaborate with them.

Q: What are some of your goals for your role this year?

“My very first goal for this role is to have more conversations with students, get to know more about the challenges students are facing now, work with my whole team and help them tackle those problems right away. I truly understand how hard it is when you are struggling and have no one by your side. Therefore, I really hope no one is left alone on the journey at Sheridan. Another goal I have for this academic year is coming up with an Academic week to engage students in various Academic services and departments on campus. This may help students be more prepared and confident in the upcoming important exams and assignments.”

What are 3 things on your bucket list?

  1. Go hiking

  2. Go on a picnic

  3. Go try new food

What was your first memory of the SSU? How did you discover that the SSU existed for student support?

“My very first memory of the SSU is when I saw SSU booth on campus with so many cool staffs in SSU uniform. I was so curious and went straight to them, asking all of the questions I have about Sheridan. I still remember that the staff was patiently answering me and informing me about the services SSU provides to support students. I honestly feel so grateful and always hopeful to be a part of the big family at SSU one day. And today I actually made it~~~”

Which SSU Perk Partner is your personal favourite?

Peel Driving School would be the my favourite one. As an international student, I find it really challenging to find a reliable driving school, especially with a discount that Peel offers Sheridan students.”

What's the best SSU event you've attended so far?

"I have attended so many events at SSU before and I have to say Sheridan Life Gala is the one I enjoy most. Sheridan Life Gala gives me a chance to immerse myself into the atmosphere that I was always dreaming of, delicious food, fancy drink, nice dress, and good music, everything was so perfect for the night. I also got an opportunity to meet and talk to many forks at Sheridan, and the interesting thing about that is we were talking for hours and hours like we got to know each other before.”

Are you a part of any SSU clubs/ associations or volunteer work?

“I used to be a member of Board of Directors in the academic year 2022-2023, this is such a rewarding experience for me and honestly, I have never thought that I would be able to put myself in this student leadership role. As a Board Member, we got a chance to discuss many topics related to Sheridan students' benefits and wellness with the President and the Executive Team. What I enjoyed most about that journey is SSU always ensures our voices are heard and our ideas are embraced in the process of improving the experience of students at Sheridan College.”
