Jay, TRC Marketing Street Team Member

I am a new member of Sheridan Student Union’s Marketing Street Team. I want to work with the Sheridan Student Union to reach several objectives and gain real world experience. Firstly, since I am an older student and this is my second college experience, I want to draw on my previous college experience to help the SSU make student experiences better, starting with my classmates and friends at the Cyber Security Club (ISS), the Sheridan Muslim Students Association (MSA), and all the students I meet through my time working with the SSU. I also want to gain marketing experience, especially with Social Media by collaborating with professionals and students at Sheridan and the SSU to learn from them and apply what I learn while I work with the SSU and with other media engagements I am involved with. I love that Sheridan has an inclusive and respectful learning environment and that I meet with people from all walks of life and draw knowledge from their experience and create connections with them. That’s just the type of person I am, and what I love to do, interact with people on a human level, learn, share experiences and draw knowledge. This is also what drove me back into post-secondary education in my late twenties, where I feel most people I know around my age are a bit hesitant to do, for various reasons. All in all, I am excited to join the Students Union and looking forward to the experience.

Get to know Jay:

Have ideas or questions about SSU events?

Q: What are some of your goals for your role this year?

“1. Draw more professional real-world knowledge from my professors and classmates.

2. Get healthier and more involved with Sheridan Athletics.

3. Be a fruitful asset to the Sheridan Students Union, in all of the professional aspects that are required of me.

4. Start going out more, starting with SSU events and being more willing to go to events. I love socializing, I am friendly and love hanging-out however, I usually do this in professional or very private settings. It would be good for me to go to more public events.”

Q: What program are you in? And why did you choose this program at Sheridan?

“I am in the Honours Bachelor of Cyber Security program at Sheridan. I chose this program because I have professional experience in the private security industry, both domestically here in Canada and in my ancestral nation of Somalia. I enjoy the security and defense industries in a whole and aim to gain professional cyber security skills and knowledge to further myself in the security space.”

What are 3 things on your bucket list?

  1.  Travel to East Asia (India, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, China, South Korea, Vietnam)

  2. Design and Build a secure and green home compound for myself in Somalia with small short time accommodation for family and friends

  3. Get a Bachelors and then start thinking about when and where to get Masters.

What was your first memory of the SSU? How did you discover that the SSU existed for student support?

“ I found an indoor route from my classes that were near the Athletics Building toward the student parking lot and walked by the SSU area many times. I also went to Orientation 2022 and learned about the SSU there. I have had coffee provided by the SSU every time I walked by a coffee stand as well.”

Which SSU Perk Partner is your personal favourite?

“Free Coffee and Popcorn”

Are you a part of any SSU Clubs/Associations or Volunteer Work?

“I am a member of ISS the cybersecurity club and the MSA the Muslim students association.”
