Hey Everyone! My name is Lexx Senior. I am a Marketing major here at Sheridan, as well, work for Sheridan Student Union!

For those who don’t fully understand/know what Black History month is; It’s a celebration of the many accomplishments and contributions of Black American and Canadians throughout history, this celebration takes place throughout the month of February! Honestly, there are so many topics that I wanted to touch on within this blog post, but I have to say the most relevant topic (especially within my own life right now), is breaking the stereotypical barriers within the dance community; especially for black women.

An amazing example of an individual that I personally have looked up to for several years; who has made such a giant impact within the dance word is Misty Copeland. Misty, is the first African American Female to become a Principal dancer for the American Ballet Theater. Working towards the title of a professional dancer is tolling enough let alone being a black female, pursuing ballet as a profession in America. Misty’s story of pushing boundaries, expectations and persevering through it all to make an impact in history/ the arts is a perfect example of a young black individual that we should be celebrating! 

We all see black excellence differently; this is just one of the many examples of black individuals who pushed stereotypical boundaries and are constantly making a difference while inspiring the younger generation (like myself) to not be afraid to pursue our dreams and goals!
