In the novel What I Know for Sure, Oprah states that “Life is full of delightful treasures if we take a moment to appreciate them. I call them ahhh moments, and I’ve learned how to create them for myself. Case in point: my 4 p.m cup of masala chai (spicy, hot, with foamed almond milk on top – it’s refreshing and gives me a little lift for the rest of the afternoon). Moments like this are powerful, I know for sure. They can be your recharge, your breathing space, your chance to reconnect with you” (Winfrey, p. 8)
Ask yourself: are you taking care of yourself? When was the last time you did something for yourself? When was the last time you chose to eat Freshii instead of McDonald’s? When was the last time you got 7 – 8 hours of sleep?
There is a stress we place on ourselves to remain as productive as possible. With everything that’s going on post-strike, school, some of us may even have two jobs and a family to take care of – it’s easy to neglect ourselves. We need to give ourselves the time to relax, unwind, and just breathe.
Me, writing this, is me taking a breath, it is me trying just to be, and reconnect with myself.
The importance of taking care of ourselves is communicated to us in every possible way. Here is another reminder of the top three things we all know we need to do:
1. Sleep Well
2. Eat Well
3. Make caring for yourself the number one priority you have for yourself
For the next week, I challenge you to be in bed and ready to sleep by 11 p.m, or whatever time is early enough for you to feel rested for your next day. I challenge you to get 7 – 8 hours of sleep. I am challenging myself to do the same.
Caring for yourself will translate into everything else you choose to do. It’s not just your physical health, but your mental health as well. Give yourself the gift of rest during the holidays, because you need to take care of yourself first.
