September 2024 Sheridan Student Union Recap
As we embark on this new academic year, we are thrilled to highlight the progress we have achieved together in our community. We kicked off this month with the vibrant excitement of a Cyberpunk-themed Welcome Week, which included several fun-filled SSU events and continued to advocate for student access to support like Health and Dental insurance. As September came to a close, we took time to reflect as a community on the importance of Truth and Reconciliation and reaffirm our ongoing commitment and collective responsibility to honour the survivors, families and communities impacted by residental schools.
Here’s a closer look at what your Sheridan Student Union has been up to this month.
Updates From Our Executive Team and Board of Directors
Sheridan Student Union staff members join together at Sheridan College's 'Every Child Matters Flag Raising.'
As we reflect on the past month, our Executive Team has been hard at work, fostering innovation and collaboration across campuses, all while enhancing the #SheridanLife experience.
All members of the Executive Team participated in the “Every Child Matters” flag raising at the Trafalgar campus. This event honoured the Indigenous children who never returned home, along with residential school survivors and their families.
Books We Love: Truth & Reconciliation
Explore this curated list of thought-provoking fiction, and non-fiction books found at the Sheridan Library in honour of Truth and Reconciliation.
The team also attended the Reconciliation Series featuring Mallory Rose, reinforcing our commitment to learn and unlearn as we continue our journey toward reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.
Our SSU team unites to honour Orange Shirt Day.
As an organization, the SSU purchased 136 shirts, allowing us to donate $1360 to the Orange Shirt Legacy Fund. This organization was established to raise awareness about the intergenerational impacts of residential schools and to emphasize that “Every Child Matters.”
Alongside our commitment to supporting Truth and Reconciliation Week, our Exec Team enhanced our understanding of students needs through connecting with over 300 students during classroom visits.
President, Ganyo Soh, speaks to students during classroom visits at Sheridan College.
Here are a few additional highlights from the Exec Team aimed at enhancing our understanding of student needs:
Ganyo, our President, Ganyo hosted her first campus visit for Conestoga Students Inc., alongside SSU Managing Director, Jamie King. The group had the opportunity to network and discuss the wins and challenges regarding the student community.

Amalia, our VP of Advocacy and Community, is now the secondary delegate at the Canadian Alliance Student Association (CASA), alongside Ganyo. She is also now sitting on the ED&I Committee at CASA and the Governance and Internal Review Committee (GIRC).
Vincent, our VP of Equity, Diversity & Inclusion, hosted a survey focusing on equity at Sheridan’s student orientation earlier last month. This survey resulted in a strong desire for support regarding mental health services, specifically through physical activities.
5 Grounding Techniques for Anxious College Students
If you’re looking to center yourself, reduce stress, and manage your anxiety over your courses and workload, you’re not alone.
Fahad, our VP of International Affairs, developed a survey to help the SSU better understand diversity and inclusivity on campus.

Grace, our VP of Academic Integrity and Student Success, effectively addressed over 20 academic appeal queries and cases. She also hosted her office hours with the Executive team in the Atrium at the HMC campus. During this event, 50 students engaged with the team, sharing valuable insights on how the SSU can enhance their academic experiences.

A drag performance by the one and only Priyanka and a magical night with mind-bending mentalist Wayne Hoffman got students pumped up for the academic year! September also featured arcade games, a roller disco, an oxygen bar, and some outdoor inflatables, for those who felt adventurous enough!

Sheridan Student Union Clubs
Our Club Coordinators hosted their first ever virtual training this month to teach Club Executives how to use our Clubs Corner software! They also hosted their Fall Club Executive Meetings, which educated Club Executives about new and changing policies.
This month, our clubs hosted 26 events and we warmly welcomed five new clubs to our community:
Creative Technologies Club: The Creative Technologies Club explores digital art and interactive tech through workshops and showcases. They provide a supportive space for learning and sharing creative projects in TouchDesigner, projection mapping, Arduino, and coding.
French Conversation Club: The French Conversation Club is a vibrant community dedicated to learning the French language and immersing club members in the richness of French culture.
Bollywood and Beyond Screening Club: The Bollywood and Beyond Film Society celebrates the vibrant and diverse world of Indian cinema. Their club is dedicated to showcasing the rich tapestry of films from across India, ranging from the dazzling spectacles of Bollywood to the nuanced storytelling of regional and independent films.
Thaqalayn Muslim Association Sheridan: This club aims to create a safe environment for Shi'i Muslims.
Sheridan Battlegrounds: This club is dedicated to fostering a supportive and engaging environment for players of all skill levels. From newcomers that are eager to learn the basics to seasoned pros looking to sharpen their tactics, this club is the ultimate community for enthusiasts of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds!
We have 3 new prospective clubs this month:
Found Footage Horror Club: The vision for this horror club is to create a space where fans of the genre can come together to explore and discuss horror in all its forms—films, books, and even games. It's a fun, inclusive community where members can share their passion for horror!
Mature Student Club: Mature Student Club caters to students who identify as a student who begins their studies at Sheridan a number of years after leaving high school. It allows students to interact through social events as well as allows members to connect with their peers.
Video Game Development Club: Video games have the possibility of being personal to each player, but to create such an experience takes people from many disciplines. We aim to foster a welcoming environment for those of any level or skill to collaborate in the fun of developing games.
