Supporting the Sheridan community through tutoring, IT, and the SSU

Why I’ve taken on multiple roles to help as many students as possible

By: Yagna Kalpa Joshi

I am an international student at Sheridan, and my journey here has been nothing short of transformative. I have realized that being "More Than a Student" is not just a catchphrase—it's a profound concept that resonates deeply with my experience. I want to share my journey and how I've actively contributed to the Sheridan community through my involvement with the Sheridan Student Union, the Learning Commons Department, and the Information Technology Department.

My decision to pursue higher education in Canada was a life-changing one. As an international student, I knew I would be stepping out of my comfort zone and embracing a new culture, a new way of life, and a new educational system. This decision was not solely about becoming a student; it was about embarking on a journey of personal growth and discovery.

One of the ways I've gone beyond the role of a traditional student is through my involvement with the SSU. Joining the SSU allowed me to engage with the diverse student body at Sheridan and contribute to enhancing the student experience. I've had the privilege of organizing events which celebrate cultural diversity, which helped bring students from various backgrounds together. These events fostered a sense of belonging and unity among international and domestic students, creating a welcoming atmosphere that transcends the boundaries of nationality.

I've also had the opportunity to represent international students' interests within SSU, advocating for their needs and concerns. Being part of the SSU has not only enriched my experience but also empowered me to make a positive impact on the Sheridan community. It strongly reinforced my belief that I am more than just a student—I am a bridge between cultures and a voice for my fellow international students.

Beyond my involvement with SSU, I also recognize the importance of academic support, so I've worked as a Program Tutor in the Learning Commons department, helping fellow students overcome academic challenges. This role has allowed me to share my knowledge and skills while honing my teaching abilities. Being a tutor is more than just a job; it's about creating a sense of camaraderie among students and helping them realize their full potential. It's a role that allows me to become a mentor and guide to others on their academic journey.

I've also ventured into the world of Information Technology (IT). As an aspiring entrepreneur, I've harnessed my passion for technology to make a meaningful impact. I've been working part-time as a Service Desk Analyst, collaborating with the IT department on various projects, from improving digital infrastructure to providing technical support. This fusion of my academic pursuits with my entrepreneurial spirit has allowed me to leverage my skills and knowledge in a way that goes beyond the confines of a classroom.

My journey as an international student at Sheridan has taught me that being more than a student is about embracing diversity, advocating for change, and actively contributing to the community. It's about recognizing that our identities and passions outside the classroom enrich our college experience and shape who we become.

Sheridan College has not only provided me with a world-class education but also a platform to be an advocate for change, a mentor to my peers, and a bridge between cultures. I am more than just a student; I am a global citizen, a change-maker, and a lifelong learner.

My journey at Sheridan College has shown me that we are all more than just students. Our unique identities, passions, and contributions are what make our college experience truly remarkable. I encourage every student, whether international or domestic, to embrace this concept and let it inspire them to make a positive impact on their academic journey and the Sheridan community. Together, we can shape Sheridan Life through our unique perspectives and shared aspirations.

You are more than a student and your story is more than just words

The More Than A Student series celebrates all the aspects of who you are outside of the classroom. By highlighting each student’s unique experience, the SSU aims to celebrate the diversity on campus, amplify individual stories and empower students to celebrate the fullness of who they are. What makes you #MoreThanAStudent?
