August 2023: Sheridan Student Union Recap

June was filled with Sheridan Pride celebrations, staff training and development opportunities!

It's time for our monthly update! This August, we've been working hard to make sure that students are up-to-date on all the resources available to them. From rental rights and transportation discounts to fun off-campus hikes and Desi Jams, August was all about soaking up the last bit of summer and getting ready for the school year ahead.

As your Student Union, we are proud to share company-wide wins throughout the year and recognize the talented and hardworking student leaders who help make it happen. Take a look at the August 2023 recap and find out what the Sheridan Student Union has been up to lately.

Our Executive Team

Leia, our VP of International Affairs, hosted an online event “Everything you Need to Know: Rental Rights” with our Legal Advisor, Bill Reid, to help students stay informed on their rights while renting off-campus spaces.

Sarah, our VP of Advocacy, shared the 40%* presto discount and welcomed 2 students to the Advocacy Committee.

Cameron, our VP of Community, conducted interviews for the Sexual Health and Violence Support Committee (SHAVS) and met with students who have a strong understanding of SHAVS-related topics and a passion for getting involved with this committee.

Cat, our VP of Academics, completed the “5 Steps To File Your Academic Appeals” blog and provided Academic Appeals Assistance to students in need

Ritz, our VP of Engagement, organized & hosted SSU 101 with Kyle and the Exec Team to welcome our new and returning staff to the team and reveal our 2023 Fall Welcome Week Theme!

Our Services Department

• Our perks fair was a success at HMC, where we showcased some of our new perks, such as Nirvana Wellness.

• Our Services booth and Student Care booth at orientation were fun and engaging and we got to meet new students and let them know about all our department has to offer!

Our Clubs & Organizations

• We had a great planning month in August to welcome students back to campus and our clubs hosted 15 events this month.

• Our Clubs Coordinators have started planning their fall club exec meetings, Fall Clubs Fair, and pop-ups. We had a very successful orientation this month! The club coordinators did an amazing job engaging students through our Jeopardy game.

• We welcomed a new club this month, PixelPerfect, which will provide students with a community where they can delve further into UX/UI and general design.

• We created a new prospective club this month: Women in Trades and Technology Sheridan, where students can connect and network with peers who are in or about to venture into the world of trades and technology.

Our Events Team

• August marked the end of our summer “Take a Trip” series, finishing strong with a beautiful hike in Mono Cliffs. Danny led the pack and, despite the rainy weather, everyone had a great time and came away with lots of funny stories!

• We brought back our classic Desi Jam event this summer, to great reviews. Though the turnout was smaller, due to fewer students on campus in the summer semester, we are excited to repeat the event with all the new and returning students in the upcoming school year.

• We had an excellent turnout of almost 50 students for our Water Olympics pop-up event in early August! The Student Life Leads organized a fun and exciting competition that kept everyone cool and refreshed on a hot summer day.

Our Marketing Team

• We hired 15 new Street team members, 5 per campus for the upcoming semester! They are all very excited to help promote all of our events, services, and campaigns throughout the year!

• We hit over 10k followers on IG  and our TikTok channel grew to 457 followers!

• We celebrated our Welcome Week "Barbie Experience Giveaway” gifting one lucky Sheridan student and their friends with a limo ride to see the Barbie movie in style.

Our Food Services Team

• We welcomed new staff joining our team for Booster Juice, Station Express, and Station Kitchen.

• We re-opened all of our food services with brand-new menus! Visit the Coffee Loft at Trafalgar, Station Express and Station Kitchen at HMC, and Bruins Coffee House at Davis for a tasty bite on a student budget. There’s a lot of delicious food and drinks to choose from: breakfast wraps, pastries, coffee, and teas, plus, we’ve got burgers, pizzas, and daily features at the Marquee at Trafalgar.

• We also did a few catering events: SU101 and Turn It Up Tuesdays turned out well.

• The Hiring Fair had a great response! Thanks to all the applicants who attended, and congratulations to those who were selected. The ones that didn't make it, no worries, there will be more job opportunities soon!
