July 2023: Sheridan Student Union Recap

June was filled with Sheridan Pride celebrations, staff training and development opportunities!

This month we all came together to support students and community wellness. From executing our first Summer Clubs Fair to participating in an SSU Team relay race, this month was all about enjoying the great weather, connecting with different resources, and making sure students know we are here to help them make the most of their time at Sheridan College.

As your student union, we are proud to share company-wide wins throughout the year and recognize the talented and hardworking student leaders who help make it happen. Take a look at the July 2023 recap and find out what the Sheridan Student Union has been up to this month.

Departments Wins/News

Exec Team

• Sarah and Cameron attended the Black Youth Fellowship Graduation and met Toronto City Councilors as well as attended the CASA Policy and Strategy Conference in late July.

Ritz, Leia & Piya attended the Racial Justice in Education Summit on July 20th, 2023 in Toronto. At this event, there were discussions around anti-racism initiatives within school boards and to identify practices that make our school boards more inclusive. The event was in partnership with a couple of groups such as Urban Alliance on Race Relations (UARR).

Sarah, the VP of Advocacy attended media training, and policy writing, and received Roberts Rules Training provided by CASA.

Cameron, the VP of Community hosted the Green it Up Coffee talk, with the presence of Mission Zero and the Bike Club to get feedback from Sheridan students about how to make Sheridan College more eco-friendly.

Cat, the VP of Academics hosted the De-stress Fest event and collaborated with them for Academic Integrity Week in October. She also attended a meeting with the Truth & Reconciliation Working group to commemorate September 30th.

Ritz, the VP of Engagement hosted the Colour Run Event for SSU Staff on July 21st, 2023. She is also actively involved in the ongoing Den Renovation.

Services Department

  • We received 210 lbs of clothing donations at our Davis campus and 79 lbs of clothing donations at our HMC campus for the Dressed for Success Program

  • All these clothes were cleaned and put out as part of our Dressed for Success program and are available for all students to pick up, free of charge

  • Wet Coffee and Lopa School of Dance were added as new partners on our Student Discount Program

Clubs Department

  • We had our first Summer Clubs Fair ever at all 3 campuses! July 10th was at Davis, July 11th was at HMC, and July 12th was at TRC. They were all very successful thanks to the help of our clubs coordinators. Lots of clubs had big increases in their membership and great interactive activities to increase student engagement.

  • We had 11 great events hosted by clubs throughout July. Take a look at Clubs Corner for events throughout the year

Events Team

  • Our Toronto Island trip was a big success this month! Even though the rain clouds loomed above, the crowds were not deterred, and the sun shone through during our trip. We hope that our students got the chance to experience something new and different on this trip, and that they are encouraged to participate more and more in our off-campus activities!

  • The Events Team started a summer series of pop-ups called “Turn it Up Tuesdays”, serving different mocktails every Tuesdays at our HM campus. It has been very popular and we hope to continue it as a monthly event as the year goes on!

Marketing Team

  • We welcomed our new HMC Digital Community Coordinator Harshita!

  • We reached over 9k followers on our Instagram and over 400 followers on TikTok!

Staff Shoutouts & Wins:

🗣️ Shoutout to Fifi, the new Student Life Lead at Trafalgar campus! Fifi has been part of our team in the past, working sound and production for many of our live events. We are excited to welcome her into her new role and look forward to what she brings to TRC life this year!

🗣️ Shoutout to our clubs Coordinators for running such an amazing clubs fair! They each brought their own great ideas to the table to ensure that each day would be a success. We would like to give Madushen a special shout out for July for going above and beyond in his role. He held an after party for club executives to relax and unwind after a busy clubs fair day. He had snacks and drinks for everyone to enjoy. He also held an awards ceremony in which he gave each club who attended a certificate of appreciation as well as certificates for clubs that had the most creative table and had the best engagement.

🗣️ Shoutout to the entire DCC team for their amazing creative work this month & for collaborating with each other/various departments to add more depth to their content creations

🗣️ A big thank you to Michela and Garrecka for setting up the Dressed for Success clothes as they came in and making space at the HMC campus for our first large batch from that campus

Thank you to all our Staff and Student Leaders for their hard work, laughs, and contributions every day. The first month of our Spring/Summer term was filled with community wins and personal growth. We can’t wait to see what exciting new activities we get up to next month!
