Whether you’re looking for something genuinely scary, delightfully eerie, or simply full of that perfect Halloween atmosphere, it’s all about the vibes. From creepy classics and gothic tales to nostalgic favorites and feel-good Halloween films, there’s something for every kind of movie night.
We’ve rounded up our top recommendations to help you get into the Halloween spirit. So, grab your favuorite snacks, turn down the lights, and settle in for a perfectly spooky movie night!

  1. Scream (1996)

This is, to this day, my favourite slasher film and, dare I say, one of my favourite movies ever. Wes Craven reinvented and revitalised the slasher genre with Scream, creating a horror classic that is clever, funny, self-aware, and genuinely scary. The story follows high school student Sidney Prescott as she is targeted by a masked serial killer known as Ghostface, one year after her mother’s murder. What makes the film so much fun is how it keeps you guessing, constantly building tension as you try to figure out who is hiding behind the mask. It’s a horror classic that never loses its spark and still holds up remarkably well to this day.

2. Corpse Bride (2005)

Stop-motion is one of my favourite forms of storytelling, and the craft and dedication behind these films always make them stand out. Corpse Bride is no exception. The story follows Victor and Victoria, whose families have arranged their marriage. Although they like each other, Victor is nervous about the ceremony, and while practising his vows in the forest, he accidentally finds himself dragged into the Land of the Dead by the Corpse Bride. Despite being only, a little over an hour long, the movie keeps you engaged until the very end. The songs are catchy, the love story is charming, and the spooky atmosphere makes it perfect for anyone who wants to get into the Halloween spirit without watching a full-on horror movie.

3. Black Swan (2010)

This movie is excellent if you are looking for a psychological drama that keeps the stakes high from beginning to end. Nina is a ballerina whose passion for dance controls nearly every part of her life. When the company's artistic director decides to replace his prima ballerina for their opening production of Swan Lake, Nina becomes his first choice for the role. She seems like the perfect fit, especially for the innocent and graceful White Swan, but she soon finds herself competing with Lily, a talented newcomer who brings a much darker and more unpredictable energy to the company. The movie does a great job of showing how far her obsession with perfection can take her, making the story feel increasingly disturbing as it goes on. It keeps you on edge and manages to keep your heart racing and your attention locked in the entire time.

4. Edward Scissorhands (1990)

This movie is also a great example of a Halloween movie that is not necessarily scary but still manages to maintain that spooky feeling. The plot follows a scientist who creates an animated human being named Edward, a gentle young man who is left unfinished after the scientist dies before he can complete him. Edward is left with a freakish appearance, made even more unusual by the scissor blades he has instead of hands. Loving suburban saleswoman Peg discovers Edward and takes him home, where he eventually falls for her teenage daughter. However, despite his kindness and artistic talent, Edward's unusual hands make him an outcast. Ultimately, Edward Scissorhands is a bittersweet Halloween classic that combines a spooky atmosphere with a touching story about love, loneliness, and finding a place where you belong.

5. Train to Busan (2016)

If you’re a fan of zombie movies, Train to Busan is probably one of the best ones out there, in my opinion. Besides being extremely entertaining and intense, it also has a surprising amount of heart and will definitely get you in your feels a little bit. The movie follows a man who boards a train to Busan with his daughter on her birthday to visit his wife. However, things quickly take a nightmarish turn when a zombie outbreak suddenly occurs across South Korea. Now, he has to do everything in his power to protect his daughter while trying to survive the chaos unfolding around them.
What makes this movie stand out is that it’s not just about zombies and survival, it’s also about family, sacrifice, and how far you’re willing to go to protect the people you love. It’s an emotional rollercoaster that will have you on the edge of your seat one minute and reaching for the tissues the next.

6. Get Out (2017)

Get Out is a movie that still shocks me to this day. If you love psychological horror and racial commentary like me, then this is the scary movie pick for you! The movie follows a young Black man who discovers something deeply unsettling about his white girlfriend's family after traveling to meet them for the first time. It's a dark, brilliant film that comments on the realities of interracial relationships and being black in America. Directed by the brilliant Jordan Peele, it stars Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams, LaKeith Stanfield, and a fantastic supporting cast. It's such a compelling watch, definitely go see it if you haven't already!

7. Coraline (2009)

This is an absolute childhood classic! It’s a movie that brilliantly explores the frustrations of being young and chasing an idealized reality. Coraline is one of those timeless films that appeals to all ages and brings a sense of comfort on a nice, cozy October afternoon. Based on the book by Neil Gaiman, it follows a young blue-haired girl who moves into a new apartment building and feels ignored by her very busy parents. She ends up discovering a secret door leading to a sinister parallel world that initially seems to offer everything she’s missing in her current reality. The movie holds your attention all the way to the end and is such a fun, imaginative watch. It’s stop motion animation sets up a vibe that is so compelling, and I definitely recommend watching if you haven’t already!

8. Sinners (2025)

Sinners takes you into a world rooted in historical racism in America with a wild, supernatural twist! It’s more so about the outcasts, and those who are looking for freedom in different ways. Right from the start, we are completely immersed in the American South and introduced to twin brothers Smoke and Stack. The two return to their hometown in Mississippi to open up a juke joint, which has been a dream of theirs for a long time. They seek help from their young cousin Sammie and their estranged partners, and things seem to start looking up for the twins and their crew. But then they face a terrifying horde of vampires drawn directly to the music coming from their club. This movie is scary, chaotic, funny, and packed with so much adventure!

9. The Shining (1980)

The Shining is a classic and is one of those movies you only watch once or twice. It tackles the terrifying breakdown of the nuclear family by using a haunted hotel as a metaphor for isolation, and domestic abuse. Similar to most of the movies on this list, it’s a psychological horror. A scary movie, with something to say. It follows a family trapped in a haunted, isolated hotel over the winter as the father slowly descends into a violent madness. The camera shots and acting in this movie are phenomenal, and feel so real at times. You should definitely watch it!

10. Nightmare before Christmas (1993)

Another absolute childhood staple! This movie follows Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, who grows bored of his yearly routine and decides to take over Christmas instead. Beyond the stunning stop-motion animation, the film allows us to explore deeper themes about the repetitiveness of reality and how hard it can be to break out of the same old boring cycle. It's an iconic film and such a fun watch. Not really a scary movie, but it has the Halloween spirit!
