Living the Best of Both Worlds: Between Who You Were and Who You’re Becoming
By: Monica
Winter semester is almost over. We’re finishing up deadlines, the weather is finally getting warmer, and everything feels like it’s coming to an end.
Picture this: Spring is here, graduation is around the corner, and then suddenly, you’re standing between two versions of yourself: the student you’ve been and the adult you’re about to become.
It’s exciting. It’s overwhelming. It’s a little bit scary.
These are the times we look back and see how far we’ve been. Remember when you used to be a little kid playing with your toys and drawing with crayons? Turning up the volume of the radio and jamming to the beat. Changing the channel of the TV to watch your favourite show.
From the little kid who used to dream big and reached for the stars, to the adult version of us that’s going to make it happen. The recent Hannah Montana 20th anniversary reconnected me to a childhood I once had. It wasn’t just nostalgia. It was a reminder that we don’t have to leave our younger selves behind when we grow up. We can carry them with us. Not saying goodbye to who you were but reintroducing her into a new chapter. And somewhere along our childhood we used to listen to songs that now hit a little deeper. It hits right at home.
“Everybody Makes Mistakes, Everybody Has Those Days”
There were moments this semester that didn’t go as planned. Outcomes that you thought you could’ve done better. Times you felt off and unmotivated. Hours when you questioned if you reviewed the materials enough times. Days when you procrastinated until you cram last minute. Nights when you stayed up late and wondered if only you have started it earlier.
We all have one of those days in our lives. But they don’t define you. We make mistakes and sometimes things don’t turn out that the way we planned. It’s those days that we learn from. We figure something else out. We don’t stay down. Remember that nobody’s perfect. What matters is that we try again.
“Don’t Let No Small Frustration Ever Bring You Down”
Have you ever thought about what happens after you graduate? We’ve been used to being a student since pre-school up until college. And now we’re about to step into a new chapter of our lives. Adulthood. So now what?
There’s that pressure to get a job right away, have a clear plan, or have it all “figured out”.
You start to build your resume and realized that you could have been involved more on campus. You could have done more volunteering. When things don’t go as expected, we start to get frustrated. When we’re frustrated, it’s easy to see that everything is going wrong. We start to compare ourselves with others. Those who are getting interviews. Those announcing new achievements they’ve done. Those who already have secured a job.
And here we are sending resumes and patiently waiting for a reply. Hoping for that next call. Praying for a job offer. It feels like you’re falling behind. You start to ask yourself if there’s something you’re missing. If there’s a step you forgot to take.
But here’s the truth: graduating isn’t the end — it’s the next chapter of your adulthood. And sometimes not knowing the plot of your chapter is thrilling but also scary. Transitioning from being a student to entering the workforce is a big change. And change is uncomfortable. We will get frustrated with getting to deal with no replies, rejection emails, and delays. But it doesn’t mean that we failed…
“Life’s A Climb”
There’s always going to be another mountain… Challenges. Rejections. Career changes. Unexpected detours. Sudden delays. But that doesn’t mean you’re going backwards. It doesn’t mean you’re not moving forward.
It’s not about how fast you get to the destination. It’s not about what’s waiting on the other side. It’s the process of going to the finish line. It’s the in-between. It’s the climb.
It’s the space where you grow confidence, practice patience, and learn to check-in with yourself.
You are allowed to feel proud of how far you’ve come and still unsure about what’s next.
You are not behind. You are in progress. You are becoming.
“Life’s What You Make It”
You can step into this chapter with intention. Look back and celebrate how much you’ve grown. Trust that you’re exactly where you need to be.
Because at the end of the day, life is what you make it.
So make this season of your life hopeful.
Make it meaningful. Make it memorable.
And most importantly—own it. Make it yours.
Remember the little kid who believed in you. That little kid who dreamed big and reached for the stars. Make the younger you proud.
