Q&A With SSU Student Executive of Academic Integrity & Success - Rushaine Phoenix

Get to know Rushaine Phoenix, your Student Executive of Academic Integrity & Success! Ever wondered what our Student Executives do to help students succeed? In this Q&A, learn as he shares insights into his roles and how he support students in their academic journey.

 

Q: What inspired you to apply for this position? 

A: “The inspiration came from my passion for fairness and helping students to thrive. Integrity is the foundation of academic growth and that students thrive when they are given the tools and resources to succeed. This position aligns with my commitment to empowering others, fostering ethical decision-making, and promoting a positive learning environment. I see this role as an opportunity to advocate for student success while upholding the values that strengthen both individuals and the wider academic community.”

Q: What program do you study and what is the story behind your choice? 

A: “My program of study is Investigations – Public and Private. The short version of the story is I was in law enforcement back home and so I wanted to build capacity.”

Q: What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned so far in your program that helps you in this executive role? 

A: “Similar to the application of various legislations, each situation should be assess based on its own merit.”

Q: How do you see your role helping students feel more confident about their academic journey? 

A: "In this role, I see myself as a guide, helping students understand that academic integrity is not about restrictions but rather building trust, confidence, and personal growth. By providing practical strategies, clear resources, and guidance, I can help students to navigate challenges. This includes time management, managing workloads, understanding policies, or making ethical decisions.”

Q: If you could describe your role in one sentence, what would it be? 

A: “The bridge to student resources.”

Q: What’s your favourite thing about working at the SSU? 

A: “The staff, lol. They are very supportive and make the work way easier.”

Q: What are some of your hobbies and passions outside of Sheridan? 

A: “I love going for walks and traveling.”

Q: What advice would you give to a student who feels overwhelmed during the academic appeals process? 

A: "You are not alone, take the process one step at a time and seek support from available resources.”

Q: What’s been the most rewarding part of your Sheridan journey so far? 

A: "Getting involved in the Sheridan community has been the most rewarding part of my journey so far, shaping not only my experiences here but also influencing how I approach life beyond campus.”

Q: What’s one thing you love doing to take care of yourself? (mentally/physically/emotionally) 

A: “Sleeping!! It helps to reset me mentally, physically, and emotionally.”
