August 2025: SSU Board of Directors Updates

SSU Board of Directors Update

Learn what your SSU Board of Directors has been up to this month!

We kicked off the month on a high note with Robert’s Rules of Order training led by the incredible Tracy Karuhogo on August 2nd. As Board Directors, it’s crucial that we’re equipped to run meetings smoothly, respectfully, and effectively, and this session hits the mark.

Tracy, a policy analyst, community advocate, and founder of the Black Girl Talk Collective, brought a wealth of experience. She previously served as President of the University of Manitoba Students’ Union, Secretary on the Board of CASA, and sits on numerous boards including Black History Manitoba and the Congress of Black Women MB. Her insight was unmatched. The session covered:
• The history and purpose of Robert’s Rules of Order
• The structure of a typical meeting
• Types of motions and how to make them
• Debate rules and how to amend motions
• Voting procedures
• And even a mock meeting where we practiced it all!

We left this training energized and empowered to lead with confidence and uphold good governance. Peter Kyadondo, TRC Director and Chairperson, shared his thoughts on the impact of the session: “This session was a game-changer for me as Chair. Tracy shared so many nuggets on what it truly takes to run an effective meeting, and learning from someone who has been in my shoes made it even more valuable. My biggest takeaway was understanding the order in which Directors contribute during discussions and how to keep us on time without losing engagement. This training was instrumental in helping our Board learn how to debate and raise concerns in a moderated, respectful way, a skill that will make us stronger leaders for students.”

At our August 19th Board Meeting at TRC, we piloted a Consent Agenda, a new tool to help us manage meetings more efficiently. Instead of voting on routine items one by one, we now review all necessary reports and approvals in advance and pass them in one motion, unless something needs discussion. The result? A smoother meeting and more time to focus on important matters. Speaking of important matters, we officially approved the 2025–26 SSU Election Dates! These changes came directly from the feedback we received from students, candidates, and election staff. Key improvements include extended timelines to give students more time to:
• Learn about the elections
• Understand their importance
• Get to know the candidates
• Become more informed voters
We're excited for a stronger, more engaging election season ahead!

Lastly, we received bittersweet news: our Managing Director, Jamie King, is moving on to an exciting new role with the College as Director of Student Life, overseeing athletics, recreation, and more. Though we’re sad to see him go, we’re proud of his next chapter and know he’ll continue to serve students with passion and dedication.

Peter shared his appreciation for Jamie’s leadership: “Jamie has been an incredible source of knowledge and support, especially when I stepped into the role of Chair. His 12 years of experience and dedication to students have left a lasting impact on SSU. I’m deeply grateful for his guidance and the countless ways he’s helped shape this organization. While we’ll miss him, I’m excited to see the difference he’ll make in his new role with the College." In the meantime, we’re fortunate that Hanh Ngo, our Director of Finance and most senior staff member, will be stepping in as Interim Managing Director. Her deep knowledge of the SSU and years of experience will ensure we stay on track as we begin the process of finding a permanent replacement.

Throughout August, we engaged students in conversations around Financial Equity during our campus office hours. We asked students about their experience with scholarships and bursaries and how financially prepared they feel heading into the new school year. We’re analyzing this feedback to help shape future SSU initiatives, advocate for better supports, and inform the kinds of financial aid programs we back. Leanne Gulmayo, HMC Director, shared this reflection on her conversations with students: “As part of our Financial Equity conversations, I asked students to rate their financial preparedness on a scale of 1 to 5 heading into the new school year. Responses ranged widely. Some felt confident with scholarships and budgeting, while others admitted they were unsure and needed more support.

Many students naturally gravitated to our booth, thinking it was direct financial help, but quickly realized it was about financial literacy, and they left with new insights and resources. Most of the students I spoke with were in their final term, asking whether they were still eligible for scholarships. When I asked if they had ever applied, most said they hadn’t because they didn’t know how. This highlights both the interest in financial support and the gap in awareness and accessibility. I learned that while some students are financially confident, many others are still navigating basic questions, reinforcing the continued need for clear and accessible financial literacy support through SSU.” Hearing directly from students is essential to how we do our jobs. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to chat. your voices matter and drive real change.

Looking ahead, our next Board Meeting is scheduled for Monday, September 15th at 7 PM at HMC. Everyone is welcome to attend and observe! We’ll also continue our office hours at all three campuses, make sure to check the SSU website for updated times and locations.
