Growing into Adulthood

Finding your own pace in a New Chapter: A reflection

By: Laura

Leaving the comfort of home and stepping into a life of your own takes courage. It means embracing uncertainty, trying new things, and learning to navigate a world that suddenly expects a lot more from you. As kids, we couldn't wait to grow up. We imagined freedom, independence, and making our own decisions. Then adulthood arrives with deadlines, responsibilities, and bills, and we start wondering why we were in such a hurry.

One thing I've learned is that everyone is figuring it out as they go. We spend so much time stressing over whether we're doing enough or making the right decisions, but the truth is that no one is completely prepared for what comes next. The future is uncertain, and while that can feel intimidating, it's also what makes life exciting. Every challenge, every opportunity, and every unexpected detour becomes part of the person we're growing into.

College is often where that realization hits the hardest. Between classes, assignments, work, and trying to maintain a social life, it's easy to feel like you're constantly trying to catch up. Many students are balancing school with one or even two jobs while also learning how to take care of themselves for the first time. There isn't a guidebook for adulthood, and there isn't a single formula that works for everyone. We all have to figure out what works for us through experience, trial and error, and a lot of patience.

I started college when I was eighteen. Legally, I was an adult, but I still felt like a teenager pretending to know what I was doing. I was deeply insecure and scared of almost everything. On top of that, I had just moved to a new country. I barely knew anyone, struggled to make friends, and was learning how to navigate a completely different culture.

I basically had to speedrun adulthood in a foreign language with my family thousands of kilometres away. They were always there for me, but there are moments when a phone call can only do so much. When you're lost at 9:00 p.m. in a city that still feels unfamiliar because Google Maps keeps sending you in circles and you are already on the wrong bus twice. Those are the moments when you realize growing up isn't just about becoming independent. It's about learning to trust yourself, even when you don'thave all the answers.

The purpose of sharing this isn't to scare you. It's to remind you that you're not the only one feeling overwhelmed. Whether you're an international student or a domestic student, college is a new beginning for all of us. Even if you've attended another college or university before, every new environment comes with its own challenges, its own lessons, and its own opportunities to grow.

Looking back, there are a few things that made the transition easier:

Familiarize Yourself

My first recommendation is to get familiar with your campus and the surrounding area before classes begin. If you have the opportunity, visit campus ahead of time and practice the route you'll be taking. Whether you drive, use public transportation, or walk, knowing how to get there, along with a couple of backup routes, can make those first few weeks much less stressful. While you're there, explore the neighbourhood. Find a coffee shop you like, a place to grab lunch, or a convenience store for those inevitable days when you forget to pack a snack. Those little things make a new place start to feel familiar.

Make Friends

The second thing I would recommend its to make friends. I know that's much easier said than done, especially if you're shy or starting over somewhere new. But the people I've met have become one of the best parts of my college experience. Some friendships begin in class, others while waiting for the bus, attending an event, or simply sitting beside someone during orientation. Not every friendship will last forever, and that's okay. The people you meet, the conversations you have, and the memories you create all become part of your journey.

Take it Easy

Finally, give yourself permission to take things one step at a time. Growing up isn't a race, and it definitely isn't a straight line. There will be moments when you feel like you've got everything under control, and others when you'll wonder if you're doing anything right. That's normal. We're all experiencing life for the first time, and mistakes are part of the process. What matters isn't avoiding them. What matters is continuing to learn, adapting, and moving forward.

Adulting isn't about having everything figured out. It's about finding your own pace. Some people will graduate before you, land their dream job first, or seem like they have their whole life planned out. That doesn't mean you're behind. Your journey is yours alone, and comparing it to someone else's will only make you forget how far you've already come.

Thank you for reading. I hope you found something in this piece that made you feel a little less alone, whether you're just starting college or simply trying to navigate another season of adulthood. Life rarely unfolds the way we expect it to, but sometimes that's where the best experiences are waiting. Trust yourself, stay open to new opportunities, and remember that it's okay to grow at your own pace. 😊
