Updates From The SSU Executive Team

During the month of January, the Executive Team continued to demonstrate strong cross-campus collaboration and student-focused leadership. All the executives maintained consistent communication with students, providing ongoing academic, personal, and program-related support through email correspondence, virtual consultations, and in-person meetings. Team members also represented the SSU in interviews, outreach initiatives, and early-stage partnership discussions with campus and external stakeholders.

Notable highlights this month, includes our continued collaboration planning with Off-Campus Housing and Sheridan Health Promotion, engagement with the EDI Office and Student Care & Community Standards for potential joint initiatives, and active promotion of the Campus SSU Strategic Plan Ambassadors. The team also supported student success initiatives tied to academic integrity, financial literacy, and wellness programming across campuses.

Furthermore, the Executive Team supported and participated in the Free Pancake Breakfast across all three campuses from January 6–8 as part of Winter 2026 New Student Orientation. We are so happy to announce that we fed over 1,000 students across all three campuses through the Free Pancake Breakfast during Winter 2026 New Student Orientation.

As a part of the SSU’s Wellness Month campaign, the Executives supported and staffed Money Talks, a financial literacy pop-up series delivered across all three campuses from January 20–22. During this interactive pop-up, we engaged with over 300 students through across all campuses and raised awareness about how financial stability can be achieved even during their student life.

Hayley & Rushaine began planning for an Off-Campus Housing Grocery Tour during Reading Week to support international and New-to-Canada students.

The team also participated in DRO interviews and student consultations, supporting academic integrity and student success processes. Initial discussions took place with three external organizations regarding potential student partnerships and perks.

Lastly, Christian attended an OSV Advocacy Committee meeting contributing to discussions on advocacy priorities and legislative engagement.

Throughout this month the team supported students across multiple campuses through one-on-one academic integrity, program-related, and personal support consultations (virtual and in-person).

Sheridan Student Union Events

January was a vibrant month for SSU events, with programming across campuses bringing students together through wellness, entertainment, and culture. In support of Wellness Month, activities began with a cozy Vision Boarding Night at Trafalgar, giving students space to reflect on their goals for the year ahead. This was followed by a relaxing Spa Day at HMC and a Friending Social at Davis, both designed to help students unwind and build new connections early in the term.

Comedy nights brought big laughs to campus as part of our Campus Comedy series. At Davis, students enjoyed performances from Jacob Balshin, Hassan Phills, and Ashwyn Singh. Trafalgar’s show featured Andrew Packer, Ola Dada, and Arhen Belisle, creating energetic evenings filled with student laughter across both campuses.

Music and dance also played a big role this month. K Pop Night at Trafalgar brought fans together for an upbeat evening of performances and shared enthusiasm, while DesiX Beats at Davis kept the dance floor lively with high-energy music and a strong turnout.

The month wrapped up on January 27 with Spotlight at Trafalgar, where students showcased their talents on stage.

👏 Congratulations to the winners, E. Webb and Mikaela Cadiz! Their performances highlighted the creativity and talent within the Sheridan College student community.

Updates from our Board of Directors

The Board began 2026 with its first meeting on January 15, where members received an update on the feasibility study for a proposed new Student Hub at TRC — a partnership between the College and the SSU. The multi-storey hub is envisioned as a central space for student life, bringing together Union services, clubs, student amenities, athletics, and an Indigenous cultural centre. The project remains in the feasibility stage, with student engagement continuing. If approved, construction could lead to occupancy by late 2032.

On January 23, Board members and SSU staff joined the first working group session with LURA, the consulting firm supporting the SSU Strategic Plan. This work will continue over the coming months, with opportunities ahead for students to share feedback.

Student affordability, health, and well-being were also key priorities this term. The Health and Dental Survey for domestic students was reopened in January to ensure broader participation, while a separate survey gathered input from international students on affordability. Feedback highlighted that housing, groceries, and transportation remain the largest expenses, reinforcing the need for more affordable campus supports. These insights will inform ongoing advocacy efforts.

At the January 27 meeting, the Finance Committee reviewed the financial outlook and noted that enrollment declines are expected to reduce SSU revenue, creating projected budget pressures. Work is underway to identify efficiencies and new revenue opportunities while protecting core student services. The 2026–27 budget will be presented to the Board in March.

As elections are now underway, this will be the final term for the current Board, with a new Board taking office in May. Until then, we remain committed to ensuring student voices continue to guide our decisions. We also encourage students to stop by upcoming office hours to share their feedback and ideas.

Updates from Finance Team

Finance kicked off the year with the budget review for the new fiscal year 2026-2027. The SSU Finance team visited Ignite, the student union for Humber Polytechnic and the University of Guelph-Humber on January 28, 2026, to exchange and share different ideas and practices.

Food Updates

January introduced a mix of seasonal drinks, menu improvements, and affordability updates across campuses.
At the Coffee Nook in the Marquee, students enjoyed limited-time winter drinks, including the Honey Infused Oat Latte and Salted Caramel Honey Matcha Latte, offering a warm, wellness-inspired treat during the colder weeks.

This term also brought simplified menus across food locations, with clearer categories such as mains, handhelds, and small bites to make choosing meals easier. These updates were shaped directly by student feedback and aim to improve both variety and value.
Alongside new options, several campus favourites returned to the menu, including the popular $2 samosas. The goal is to balance familiar student-loved items with new dishes introduced throughout the term.
To further support students, prices were also reduced on select menu items. The updated small bites options continue to provide quick, budget-friendly snacks for students looking for affordable choices on campus.

That’s a Wrap on January!

We thank our student community who showed up to our events, pop-ups and supported us right from the start of this Winter semester. As we move forward, we hope each one of you remains engaged and encouraged to be a part of our decisions and decision-making process.
