Take a look at Your Board of Directors Update
May marked a strong start to our term as your newly elected Board of Directors!
From May 9–11, we attended the Board Retreat at Fern Resort in Ramara, Ontario. This three-day retreat gave us the opportunity to dive into intensive training, learn about the SSU as a not-for-profit organization, and get clear on our responsibilities within student governance. It was also a valuable chance to build strong working relationships with one another—something we know is essential to the work ahead.

We officially kicked off the term with our first Board Meeting on May 20, where we experienced the full meeting process—from calling the meeting to order, engaging in discussion, passing motions, and adjourning. One of our first motions was a key one: the appointment of this year’s Chairperson, Peter Kyadondo, and Vice-Chairperson, Austin Sharpe. Both are ready and committed to supporting the Board through the year ahead.

In addition, Peter Kyadondo represented the Board at the Annual Studentcare Stakeholder Meeting in Montreal, held over two days. “It was a valuable opportunity to connect with student leaders from across the country and participate in leadership development sessions focused on spokesperson training, negotiation skills, and strategies for managing energy and burnout,” Peter shared. “We also received an introduction to Alumo—the new brand that Studentcare is transitioning into—which represents a refreshed commitment to accessibility, equity, and student empowerment. This experience helped deepen my understanding of how our health and dental plans are structured, how they serve our community, and how we as student leaders can advocate more effectively for the needs of our peers. I’m excited to bring what I learned back to the Board as we continue working to support and represent you this year.”
Looking ahead to June, we’re focused on keeping the momentum going. Our second Board Meeting is coming up soon, and we’re eager to continue building on the work we’ve started. As always, these meetings are open to students, and we encourage you to attend, observe, and engage in the process. June marks the beginning of our front-facing office hours. This is a chance for you to connect with us directly, share your thoughts, and help shape the conversations we bring to the table. We want to better understand the issues that matter most to you—and begin developing ideas and goals that reflect your needs. We’re here to serve, and we’re just getting started.
