Designing Your Path: Jaine’s Journey in Interaction Design

Q&A With Jaine Shin, SSU Junior Graphic Designer

Have you ever wondered what it’s like being in the Interaction Design (IDX) program at Sheridan? We sat down with Jaine to chat about life in IDX, working at the SSU, and her plans for the future. Whether you’re heading into the IDX program, passionate about working in the industry, or just want the inside scoop on college life, check out our Q&A chat:

Q: How have you balanced working while being in your final year?

A: I rely a lot on time management tools. I use Notion and Google Calendar to organize all of my tasks, and I regularly check what I need to focus on at each stage. I also make sure to schedule at least one free day each week just for myself. This helps me relieve stress and prevent burnout while balancing both school and work!

Q: What's a project or assignment you're really proud of working on? What made it so rewarding?

A: I’m really proud of an internship project where I worked with a partner to redesign a website for a design studio. It was my first paid design project, which made it especially meaningful to me. We completed design & development in two weeks and the client was very satisfied with the final result, which made the experience even more rewarding. It felt like a moment where I could truly prove my skills, and it validated all the effort I had put into my work!

Q: What’s something you wish you knew before going into this program?

A: I wish I had known more clearly what I liked, what my design style was, and how to manage my time effectively. During my first few years, since I didn’t fully understand my preferences or have strong time management skills, it was challenging to build a solid foundation from start to finish.

“As an IDX student, learning graphic design is one of the key skills. Working as a JGD at the SSU has given me more hands-on experience, which helps me continuously improve my graphic design skills.”
- Jaine Shin

Q: What made you choose Sheridan and what made you select your program?

A: I chose Interaction Design because it allows me to work in a space where art and commercial value coexist. When I was younger, I was preparing to become an illustration student. However, I realized that a purely artistic path might not be the right long-term career for me. I struggled to express myself only through art, and I felt more comfortable when I was creating something for others.

Q: Tell us about your experience in your program. What surprised you most? What was challenging?

A: What surprised me the most was how many different branches UI/UX has. I thought it was simply a combination of design and interaction. However, as time went on, I realized how diverse the field actually is, which made me even more interested in the program.  This diversity also became the most challenging part. I didn’t expect the program to include such a strong focus on research, and that was difficult for me at first. But, through this process, I was able to learn many new skills and grow as a designer!

Q: What's a hidden gem (an item, app, tool, software, etc.) that wasn't on your syllabus that you found to be essential to your success?

A: Participating in hackathons has been a hidden gem for me. Through these experiences, I was able to collaborate with other designers and developers, which helped me broaden my perspective on deliverables and teamwork!

Q: What’s your favourite way to unwind in your free time?

A: Watching movies! Every Friday night, I cook my favorite food(usually French fries) and watch a movie on my 32-inch monitor. I really enjoy following how the story unfolds, noticing the details of the production, and seeing how much care the director put into the film. It makes me feel like I’m truly part of the movie!

Q: What’ advice would you give to your first year self?

A: Just enjoy, and don’t be afraid to explore!

Q: How would you describe a typical day working at the SSU?

A: As a JGD, my day is pretty straightforward. I usually start by checking my tasks for the day, then move on to researching references and designing the visuals I was asked to work on. At the same time, I often have conversations with my coworkers, which gives me moments where I feel connected to the team. :D !

Q: What is something that surprised you about working at the SSU?

A: I was really surprised to realize that working at the SSU is very chill. Of course, we always focus on completing our tasks, but the overall atmosphere is friendly and welcoming. I appreciate that environment, and I think that’s why I was able to adapt so quickly!

Q: What's one of the most exciting things you've done in your role so far? What made it so fulfilling?

A: Designing the Winter Fair poster was one of the most exciting experiences for me. The process took a long time because of additional requirements and detailed feedback, but that’s exactly what made it so fulfilling. Putting in the effort and seeing the final result come together made the project especially rewarding.

Q: What's your ideal life like after graduation? Share some of your goals and aspirations!

A: I’m excited about getting a job and doing work that I genuinely enjoy. I look forward to building my dream life: living in my own apartment with a mini home theatre, working at a design studio where I can maintain a healthy work-life balance, spending time for myself by visiting exhibitions, and enjoying life with my friends!
