This October, the SSU had a busy month, full of fun, outreach, spookiness and more. Take a look at October’s recap and find out how our teams focused on advocacy, student-well being and community, all while keeping students entertained with fun engagements!
Updates From Our SSU Board of Directors
If you haven’t already checked out the Board Monthly Update, the team held two Board meetings at the Davis and TRAF campuses, respectively. During the first meeting, the Board received and reviewed the Quarterly Financial Condition Update, which allows the Managing Director to present an overview of The SSU’s financial performance. The report showed the organization remains in a strong financial position, ensuring that student resources and initiatives continue to be well supported.
Peter, Austin, and Navdeep participated in a discussion with the SSU’s contracted consultant, who continued its review of the student health and dental plan through a focus group session to determine whether the current domestic insurance provider delivers appropriate value to students. Additionally, this month, the Board’s ‘student well-being' focus was rooted in the team wanting to better understand students’ lived experiences and the decisions they make around food. They hosted several Board Office Hours dedicated to gathering student feedback on the challenges of accessing affordable, healthy food.
Later in the month, a focus group session with Montgomery Architects brought together student leaders, staff, faculty, and community partners to discuss the high-level vision and plan for a potential new building project at TRC. Because the facility will serve both students and the broader community, gathering input from future users is a vital part of the SSU’s collaborative planning process.
The Board continued advancing their Strategic Plan initiative this month, they’re closing in on a final consulting firm to aid in shaping our organization’s long-term vision and priorities. They’ve also established a Hiring Committee to oversee the recruitment of the next SSU Managing Director.
Lastly, the Board will use Transportation Survey insights, presented by Dean Langan at a meeting, to guide future initiatives supporting commuting students.
Updates From Our SSU Executive Team
This month, in terms of advocacy, the team met with Brampton Transit to share and advocate for Sheridan student perspectives on transit services. They are actively reaching out to MiWay to schedule a similar meeting. The team also met with various local officials. Early in the month, Samiya and Christian met with Mississauga Ward 6 Councillor, Joe Horneck. Rushaine also joined them for a meeting with Brampton Wards 9 & 10 Councillor, Gurpartap Singh Toor.
The Executive Team successfully conducted midterm check-ins with students. They walked through the hallways, gathered direct feedback from students and provided necessary support. They also attended the recent Clubs Conference, where they shared their roles and outlined how the team can best support club executives and their initiatives.
Later in the month, Hayley joined Samiya and Christian to meet with Mississauga Ward 1 Councillor, Stephen Dasko to discuss student- related community matters. Christian also met with Mississauga Ward 7 Councillor, Dipika Damerla, to discuss key student issues, such as transit, housing affordability, and the impact of Bill 33. Additionally, Samiya and Christian attended a press conference at Queen’s Park in support of CASA and Ontario Student Voices speaking out regarding Bill 33. The press conference highlighted the importance of student unions in providing vital student service.
Lastly, Rushaine hosted the Study Smart Pop-up initiative across all three campuses, which helped students get insights about effective studying during exams. This initiative supports the mission of creating an exceptional student experience by fostering academic success through proactive engagement. It aimed to equip students with essential skills in time management, organization, and study strategies to help them balance multiple responsibilities effectively. By promoting the use of tutoring and academic support services, it encourages a culture of help-seeking and continuous improvement, ultimately enhancing academic integrity, student success, well-being, and confidence.

We had a lot of big events in October! Our biggest, most consistently sold-out event, Diwali, was another huge turnout for the Davis campus! Shoutout to the students and all the hardworking staff, who made that event happen smoothly and successfully.
We also held our annual Pumpkin Patch trip to Downey's Farm this month, inviting students & staff and their families to join in the Fall festivities! And on top of that family fun, our 4th annual Family Halloween party happened this month as well! Everyone dressed up in costumes, got some face paint and caricatures drawn, and Ben-Tastic provided some magical entertainment for all. October also played host to some spine-chilling events, including the Halloween Carnival Party featuring Monsters of Schlock, and our yearly Halloween Haunt trip to Canada's Wonderland. It was a truly a spook-tacular month!
In recognition of World Mental Health Day on October 10th, we focused on various wellness initiatives this month, including puppy yoga, Junk Journal nights, and Sexy Bingo nights. We always try to focus on different areas of wellness that are relevant to college life, such as physical, mental, and sexual health, and bring attention to those with fun and engaging events for all areas of interest!
Updates From Our Clubs Team
The Clubs Team hosted their Fall Clubs Fair across all 3 campuses from September 29th to October 3rd and it was attended by 68 clubs!
