I wanted to work with the SSU because I enjoy connecting with people, being involved on campus, and creating experiences that make student life more fun and welcoming. I’m really looking forward to meeting more students, promoting SSU events and services, and bringing creative ideas to the team.

Get to know Riya (she/her):

Q: Tell us about you and your role within the SSU

I’m Riya, and I’m joining the Promotions & Engagement Team at the Trafalgar Campus! I wanted to work with the SSU because I enjoy connecting with people, being involved on campus, and creating experiences that make student life more fun and welcoming. I’m really looking forward to meeting more students, promoting SSU events and services, and bringing creative ideas to the team. One thing I really enjoy about Sheridan is how diverse the community is and how many opportunities there are to get involved outside of classes.

Q: What are some of your goals for your role this year?

One of my main goals is to help more students become aware of the events, services, clubs, and opportunities available through the SSU. I also want to come up with creative and engaging ways to connect with students on campus and make events feel welcoming and exciting. Personally, I’m hoping to improve my communication, marketing, teamwork, and event promotion skills while meeting new people and making a positive contribution to the Sheridan community.

Q: What program are you in? And why did you choose this program at Sheridan?

I’m in the Honours Bachelor of Computer Science – Data Engineering program. I chose this program because I’ve always been interested in technology, problem-solving, and learning how software and data can be used to solve real-world problems. I chose Sheridan because I liked the hands-on learning approach and the opportunities to gain practical experience through projects and co-op.

Q: What was your first memory of the SSU? How did you discover that the SSU existed for student support?

One of my first memories of the SSU was seeing the events, activities, and promotions happening around campus when I first started at Sheridan. At first, I mainly knew the SSU through campus events and clubs, but over time I learned more about the services, student discounts, support, and opportunities they provide. Getting involved with student activities made me realize how much the SSU contributes to making campus life more engaging and welcoming.

What are 3 things on your bucket list?

1. Travel to as many countries as possible

2. Go skydiving at least once

3. See the Northern Lights in person ✨

Q: What's the best SSU event you've attended so far?

The AWS workshops and student club events have been some of my favourites because I enjoy events where students can meet new people while also learning something useful. I love seeing students with similar interests come together and connect outside of the classroom.
