May 2025: Sheridan Student Union Recap

Mary 2025 Sheridan Student Union Recap.

May was a month of fresh starts and new beginnings. We kicked off the Spring/Summer term by celebrating diversity on campus, expanding our services and exploring new ways to shape the Sheridan Life. From student-led events, and exciting club launches, the summer term is officially in motion!

Updates From Our SSU Board of Directors

The SSU 2025-2026 Board of Directors.

May marked an exciting start for our SSU 2025–2026 Board of Directors! The SSU Board began their term with a three-day retreat at Fern Resort, where they received intensive training, learned more about student governance, and built strong bonds with each other.

The SSU Board officially kicked off their work at the first Board Meeting on May 20, where they appointed Peter Kyadondo as Chairperson and Austin Sharpe as Vice-Chairperson. Later in the month, Peter represented Sheridan at the Studentcare Stakeholder Meeting in Montreal. This was a great opportunity to connect with student leaders across Canada and bring valuable insights back to the Board.

Curious what the SSU Board did in their intensive training? Check out the SSU Board of Directors' May update.

Updates From The SSU Executive Team

Participants of the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations (CASA) gathered in front of Parliament in Ottawa.

The SSU Executive Team focused on welcoming new leadership and preparing for the term ahead. We are excited to bring Samiya Khan on board as the new Director of the Student Executive Team, and she’s off to a strong start!

Samiya represented Sheridan students at the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations (CASA) Conference in Ottawa and the  Ontario Student Voices (OSV)  Conference in Toronto, advocating on a national and provincial level in her first month.

Supporting this transition was SSU’s former President Ganyo Soh, who also attended the conferences to help guide and strengthen the handoff. As her term came to a close, Ganyo reflected on her time in office and the work accomplished over the past year:

“As President, my role was to enhance the experience of our fellow students by building a strong sense of community and providing a space where every student feels seen and heard. I have been honored to represent student interests and present them to all stakeholders, working together to foster positive social change.
I want to especially thank the Sheridan Student Union Operations team and Board Members and Volunteers for their steadfast support in our advocacy efforts to amplify the student voice. Your collaboration has been invaluable.

"To my executive team, I want to acknowledge your professionalism, resilience, and unwavering work ethic — your dedication made our vision a reality, and I am truly grateful for your hard work.
To the entire Sheridan community, I have cherished every conversation and engagement we have shared."

We’re incredibly grateful for Ganyo’s leadership and lasting contributions to the SSU.

As for Samiya, her energy and dedication are already setting the tone for what’s ahead.

“I’m truly grateful to have the chance to do this work and support our students through meaningful advocacy”, she shared.

Samiya Khan is now focused on hiring and onboarding a new Executive Team, set to begin in June, and we’re excited to see this next chapter take shape.

Sheridan Student Union Events

Our SSU Events Team, partnered up with Sheridan Pride Club, the Building Positive Space Committee, and the Sheridan Queer Employee Resource Group to host our annual Pride Flag Raising to held our annual Pride Flag Raising ceremony at the HMC campus to celebrate the upcoming June Pride Month! It was great to partner with various Sheridan departments for this important acknowledgement, highlighting Sheridan's celebration of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Drag artist Guy Anabella hosted and met some Sheridan staff and students, and even the weather cooperated! We look forward to keeping this tradition alive, year after year.

We're thrilled to welcome back returning coordinators Miranda and Madushen, and introduce our newest team member, Océanna.
